📌 General Characteristics of the Eclipse
On August 2, 2027, there will be a total solar eclipse that some media have called the “solar eclipse of the century” due to its exceptional duration of darkness over land: up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds, the longest visible from 1991 until 2114.
The Moon’s shadow will cross the Strait of Gibraltar, entering from the Atlantic, passing through the south of the Iberian Peninsula, and continuing across North Africa and the Middle East, reaching Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The magnitude of the eclipse, approximately 1.079, is due to the Moon being near perigee and the Earth near aphelion, making the Moon appear larger and the Sun smaller.
Totality in optimal zones will occur between approximately 10:45 and 10:50 AM (Spanish peninsular time), with the Sun high enough in the sky to facilitate safe observation.
