Total Solar Eclipse in Spain – August 12, 2026

📌 General Characteristics of the Eclipse

The path of totality in Spain stretches from A Coruña to Valencia and Palma de Mallorca, crossing key cities such as Oviedo, León, Burgos, Zaragoza, and Santander.

It is the first total eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in over a century; the last one occurred in 1905, and the most recent on the continental part was in 1959, only in the Canary Islands.

The eclipse will take place during sunset when the Sun will be between 1° and 13° above the horizon throughout Spain, making a clear western horizon and unobstructed sky visibility essential.

🛡️ Eye Safety and Protection

Viewing a solar eclipse without certified glasses can cause irreversible eye damage, including retinal burns. It is essential to use certified eclipse glasses with filters that comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard, preferably from brands such as Spectrum or other approved manufacturers.

Using regular sunglasses, homemade filters, or looking directly at the Sun without protection—even during partial phases—is strongly discouraged.
